Hognose Snake Predator Deception

"Deceit certainly helps the hognose snake. When a predator approaches, it feigns death, writhing in agony and then flipping onto its back with its mouth agape and its tongue lolling out. It may even emit a drop of blood from its eyes and a stink reminiscent of days-dead reptiles; predators, after all, prefer their meat fresh."

Sharon Begley, "In Explaining How We Got This Way, Beware of the Just-So Story." WSJ.com, June 25, 2004.
