Sulfur dioxide
A compound composed of one sulfur and two oxygen molecules. Sulfur dioxide emitted into the atmosphere through natural and anthropogenic processes is changed in a complex series of chemical reactions in the atmosphere to sulfate aerosols. These aerosols are believed to result in negative radiative forcing (i.e., tending to cool the Earth's surface) and do result in acid deposition (e.g., acid rain). See aerosol, radiative forcing, acid deposition, acid rain. (source: EPA) Background from Wikipedia Sulfur dioxide (also sulphur dioxide) is the chemical compound with the formula SO2. This important gas is main combustion product of sulfur compounds and is of environmental concern. SO2 is often described as the "smell of burning sulfur." SO2 is produced by volcanoes and in various industrial processes. Since coal and petroleum contain various amounts of sulfur compounds, their combustion generates sulfur dioxide. Further oxidation of SO2, usually in the presence of a catalyst such as NO2 forms H2SO4, and thus acid rain.[citation needed] CNNMoney.com...the chief culprit in global warming; nitrous oxide, which produces smog; sulfur dioxide, which causes acid rain; mercury and particulate matter.
