In the early 1990s, internal and external economic
conditions
forced a major reappraisal of Poland's export and import
policies. The once-profitable export markets of the Soviet
Union
were a much less reliable source of income after that
empire
disintegrated and hard currency became the predominant
medium of
exchange among its former members. In this situation,
increased
trade with much more demanding Western partners became the
primary goal of Polish trade policy.
