Mauritius Index

Mauritius faces no external security threat. Chronic political and labor unrest pose the greatest internal threat to the government. During the early 1970s, for example, the authorities used the paramilitary Special Mobile Force (SMF) to jail opposition politicians and trade union members. However, by the 1980s, such practices had stopped. At least since 1980, Mauritius has not experienced significant, large-scale political violence. Several assassination attempts have been made against Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth, but these actions were by disaffected individuals rather than any antigovernment group.
