A good overview of Iraqi politics from the overthrow of the
monarchy in 1958 until the mid-1980s is Phebe Marr's The
Modern History of Iraq. An excellent source for details about
Iraqi politics during the first ten years of Baath Party rule is
Majid Khadduri's Socialist Iraq. The social origins of the
Baath leaders are exhaustively examined in Hanna Batatu's The
Old Social Classes and the Revolutionary Movements of Iraq.
An analysis of the early years of Saddam Husayn's presidency is
Christine Moss Helms's study Iraq, Eastern Flank of the Arab
World. Tim Niblock edited a collection of essays on the state
of politics at the beginning of the 1980s called Iraq: The
Contemporary State. For background on the war with Iran see
Jasim Abdulghani, Iraq and Iran: The Years of Crisis. (For
further information and complete citations, see Bibliography).
