This edition of Cyprus: A Country Study
replaces
the previous edition published in 1980. Like its
predecessor, the
present book attempts to treat in a compact and objective
manner
the dominant historical, social, economic, political, and
national
security aspects of contemporary Cyprus. Sources of
information
included scholarly books, journals, and monographs;
official
reports and documents of governments and international
organizations; and foreign and domestic newspapers and
periodicals.
Researchers of Cypriot affairs face both feast and famine.
There is
much information about the origins and development of the
island's
complex intercommunal problem, some of it of a high
quality. But
readers curious about less vital political issues, or
searching for
economic or social data, often will find information
sparse or of
dubious validity.
Chapter bibliographies appear at the end of the book;
brief
comments on some of the more valuable sources for further
reading
appear at the conclusion of each chapter. Measurements are
given in
the metric system; a conversion table is provided to
assist those
who are unfamiliar with the metric system (see
table 1,
Appendix).
The contemporary place-names used in this study are
those
approved by the United States Board on Geographic Names,
as set
forth in the official gazetteer published in 1953. The
Turkish name
of towns or geographic formations located in the Turkish
Cypriotadministered area are provided in parentheses after the
placename 's first appearance in a chapter. A list of
place-names so
identified is provided (see
table 2, Appendix). Greek
Cypriot names
are transliterated as they commonly appear in
English-language
publications. Because the United States government does
not
recognize the Turkish Cypriot state created in Novemeber
1983, its
name, the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" ("TRNC"),
is placed
within quotation marks.
The body of the text reflects information available as
of
January 1991. Certain other portions of the text, however,
have
been updated. The introduction discusses significant
events that
have occurred since completion of research; the Country
Profile
includes updated information as available; and the
Bibliography
lists recently published sources thought to be
particularly helpful
to the reader.
