Pharmacology and use:
Clindamycin is an antibiotic, similar to and a derivative of lincomycin. Clindamycin can be used in topical or systemic treatment. It is effective as an anti-anaerobic antibiotic and antiprotozoal. For the treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria (anaerobes, streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci)

Mechanism Of Action:
Systemic/Vaginal-Clindamycin inhibits protein synthesis of bacteria by binding to the 50 S ribosomal subunits of the bacteria. Topical-Clindamycin reduces free fatty acid concentrations on the skin and to suppress the growth of Propionibacterium acnes (Corynebacterium acnes) , an anaerobe found in sebaceous glands and follicles.

Interactions for Clindamycin:

Clindamycin has been shown to have neuromuscular blocking properties that may enhance the action of other neuromuscular blocking agents. Therefore, it should be used with caution in patients receiving such agents. Antagonism has been demonstrated between clindamycin and erythromycin in vitro. Because of possible clinical significance, these two drugs should not be administered concurrently.
