An article
in today's WSJ described the "booming" market
for insects used for commercial activities. Author Bill Richards
reports that farmers are turning to predatory insects as an alternative
to chemical pesticides in addressing problems with pests.

A couple weeks ago environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill was jailed
in Ecuador for protesting a proposed oil pipeline that will cross the cloud
forest of Mindo-Nambillo Reserve. Hill is well-known in California
for her 2-year stint atop a redwood tree in Northern California protesting
the logging of the Headwaters forest. Ecuadoran President Gustavo
Noboa called Hill (28 years old) "the old cockatoo who climbs trees."

An interesting article in the Wall Street Journal on the impact of the collapse of coffee prices on poor farmers in Central America. The article suggests that a key to their financial survival is the high-end market for specialty beans such as "green coffee" -- those harvested in an environmentally manner.

As publisher of a conservation/ecology oriented resource I find it amusing when I recieve solicitations (SPAM) to buy hardwoods from the Amazon rainforest. I get such offers on a surprisingly frequent basis, probably about one per week. I'm not sure where they get my email address. Anyway I'm posting a copy of one such email for entertainment purposes.

The latest issue of Science features an article suggesting that lush rainforest "emerged surprisingly soon after the asteroid collision that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago." The study claims rich plant life was present 1.4 million years after the impact challanging the conventional assumption that it took 10 million years for Earth plant lfie to recover from the strike [A Tropical Rainforest in Colorado 1.4 Million Years After the Cretaceous-Tertiary Boundary.
