Countries Appendix ZIMBABWE (22.5%) Zimbabwe has a large population of peasants which cause severe environmental degradation of their infertile lands. The government has tried to amend this problem by moving peasants to new areas, but this technique has backfired resulting in more environmental destruction. Zimbabwe is faced with terrible erosion; over 5% of the land area is severely eroded. Over-grazing and agriculture combined with the erosion is causing desertification in some areas. Very little of Zimbabwe's rainforest remain. Zimbabwe has one of the highest rates of AIDS infection on the planet and population growth rates have fallen significantly in the past decade to 1.1% (without AIDS the population growth rate would be 2.5%). Today, because of AIDS, life expectancy in Zimbabwe has fallen from 64.9 to 39.2, almost a 40% decrease. |
