Countries Appendix UGANDA (30.6%) Prior to the rule of Amin (1971), Uganda had a good environmental record, although during his reign, the forests suffered from civil and political battles. From 1971 to 1987, Uganda lost 50% of its forests. Today the forests are rapidly disappearing due to subsistence farming, cutting for fuelwood, and colonization by the rapidly increasing population. It is a shame that these forests are disappearing because they are very diverse: over 5000 plant species along with an abundance of primate and bird species (WCMC 1988). Uganda's 2% annual deforestation rate and exploding population growth rate puts it in a position to lose all of its forests shortly after 2000. The once thriving gorilla-trekking tourist industry of Uganda suffered a major setback with the 1999 brutal murder of eight foreign tourists by Rwandan Hutus. . . . . .
