Countries Appendix SIERRA LEONE (18.3%) Sierra Leone has substantial mineral reserves, but still depends much on slash-and-burn cultivation for agriculture. Population pressures have stepped up logging, clearing for cattle grazing, and fuelwood collection. No conservation or forestry management plan has been proposed, so forests are disappearing rapidly. Only 10 years ago, forest covered over 75% of Sierra Leone, although today they have dwindled to under 20%. Any sort of government planning has been set back by years of civil war. |
