Countries Appendix SENEGAL (38.3%) Senegal's rich biodiversity (over 2100 plant species and 550 animal species) is seriously threatened by a rapidly increasing population which accelerates trafficking in native species, damaging hydroelectric projects, poaching, and deforestation. Deforestation is mostly the result of clearing trees for fuelwood, charcoal, and lumber and has caused over 60% of Senegal's forest cover to disappear since 1970. Deforestation has contributed to soil erosion, flooding, and periodic drought which have devastated regional agriculture. |
