Countries Appendix SAO TOME AND PRINCIPE (73.7%) The geographic isolation from Africa of Sao Tome and Principe has resulted in high endemnicity, notably among plants (87 species) and birds (26 species). Sao Tome and Principe have large tracts of forest inaccessible because of rough terrain. However, commercial logging remains an important contributor to the economy especially since the economy of this poor island nation is primarily cocoa, the market for which has fallen and the country has fallen deep in to debt because it has to import all its fuel and most foodstuffs. |
