MOZAMBIQUE (21.5%)

Mozambique, one of the world's poorest nations, torn by 16 years of brutal civil war, is now being opened up for development by foreigners. Recently there was bidding for a coastal wetland area in southern Mozambique between a multi-millionaire American, who wanted to build an extensive theme park, and a South African paper firm that wanted to plant 30,000 hectares of eucalyptus for pulp wood. Both of these plans would involve degradation of the environment, but would bring much needed money to this impoverished region. Mozambique has tremendous potential for tourism development with its beautiful beaches, safari life, Lake Malawi, and foreign investors are showing interest. Unfortunately, future development of Mozambique will probably come at a high cost to its few remaining forests.
