Countries Appendix MALAWI (35.5%) Malawi is one of the world's least developed countries with an agriculturally based-economy and over 90% of its population is rural. This land-locked nation is home to Lake Malawi which houses some of the greatest fish diversity of any lake on earth. There is some rainforest cover which is being reduced as a result of fuelwood collection and agriculture, though the population has been devastated by AIDS, reducing the expected lifespan 28% from 51.1 years to 36.6 years. Deforestation of forests has resulted in soil erosion and siltation of parts of the lake. Malawi, with its famous lake and safari wildlife, has tremendous potential for ecotourism potential which would provide an additional source of income for local peoples and the government to develop more sustainable forestry. |
