EL SALVADOR (5.1%)

El Salvador is the second most deforested country in Latin America after Haiti. Almost 85% of its forested cover has disappeared since the 1960's leaving 5.1% of the land area forested. Over 50% of El Salvador is not even suitable for food cultivation. The result of a small area of forest cover is a low biodiversity and serious environmental problems including erosion and flooding.

El Salvador's meager forests are threatened by its high population density that relies heavily on the collection of fuelwood and subsistence hunting and agriculture. Although the government has protected considerable areas of forest, forestry laws go unenforced due to lack of funds and management.

Fires in 1998 caused more than $172 million in damage to forests and agricultural plots.
