Countries Appendix CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC (48%) Subsistence agriculture, diamond mining, and forestry form the bulk of the economy of the Central African Republic. Burdened with poor infrastructure, a largely unskilled work force, and poor economic policies, the Central African Republic is several years away from any sort of development. High transportation costs makes timber from the Central African Republic relatively unattractive among African producers. Nevertheless, according the the ITTO 1998, more than 2 million hectares are under concession. Most wood from the Central African Republic is exported to Europe. Surprisingly, the government is moving to protect the country's large forest reserves of the south from overexploitation. Even so, former forest lands, cut for timber and fuelwood, are slowly turning to desert in the north. Poachers from Sudan and Chad has diminished much wildlife in some regions and resulted in the extinction of the Black Rhino. . . . . .
