Saving What Remains Returning Carbon Dioxide to the Earth? Some researchers have suggested that carbon dioxide should be reinjected into the ground instead of venting natural gas into the atmosphere. By adding oxygen to coal, an intermediate gas mixture can be converted (by reacting it with water vapor at a high pressure) into hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The hydrogen can be burned for electricity, while the carbon dioxide can be separated and reinjected. The technology is already here since petroleum engineers take carbon dioxide from underground and reinject it into the ground to flush oil from dwindling deposits.
