Disappearing Opportunities Linking Global Warming and the Ozone Hole As the climate warms the lower atmosphere, the stratosphere - the part of atmsophere that contains the ozone layer - cools. Waibel et al. (1999) suggest that a cooler stratosphere could inhibit an important mechanism that protects ozone in the upper atmosphere. Thus future global warming could delay the recovery of ozone layer or even enlarge existing holes in the layer which serves to protect earth from damaging UV rays (Waibel et al. 1999). |
