Disappearing Opportunities No Forests: No Panama Canal Today the Panama Canal is threatened by local deforestation of watersheds. Since the canal depends on freshwater to operate the locks, the canal is being adversely effected by declining rainfall. A larger problem is the widespread siltation of the canal from erosion. This siltation is so extensive that is may soon prevent some ships from crossing the canal. Dredging the canal so expensive that it may be cost prohibitive. |
