Imperilled Riches

Case Study: the Freeport Mine, Irian Jaya, Indonesia

Freeport-McMoRan, based in New Orleans, has operated the Mount Ertsberg gold, silver, and copper mine for over 20 years and since converted the mountain into a 600-meter hole.  In the process, the company has poisoned local rivers, by allegedly dumping 120,00 tons of toxic waste into them every day, rendering the water is undrinkable and surrounding vegetation and wildlife is dying.  In addition, international observers report that the company has taken an active role in suppressing local indigenous peoples whose lives have been adversely affected by the mine.  Since 1967, several thousand local people have allegedly been killed in conflicts with the Indonesian military which works in coordination with mining officials.   Human rights’ watchers report that violence continues against local peoples and tribal leaders who oppose the project are taken away in Freeport vehicles and beaten by the Indonesian military.
